Why nominate your nurse?

This award shines a spotlight on a nurse who's truly made a difference to you and your loved ones. They're the heroes who've been there for you during tough times, providing outstanding care when you needed it most.

What does the winning nurse receive?

The winning nurse will receive a bursary to attend the British Association of Urological Nurses (BAUN) Conference, taking place in Manchester from 18–20 October 2026.

The prize includes up to £850 to cover: a two-day conference pass, entry to the BAUN Award, dinner, travel, and accommodation.

Attending this conference will:

  • Provide an amazing opportunity to improve their prostate cancer knowledge through professional development

  • Allow them to learn from leading experts in the field

  • Give them new insights to enhance their patients’ experience and save more men’s lives

Who can be nominated?

Any nurse who’s currently working within the NHS and supporting men with prostate cancer.

Each nomination is evaluated independently and isn't influenced by the number of votes they receive.

The question is:

How has your NHS nurse made things better for you or your loved one?

Please share an example (or examples) of how they went above and beyond their role to make your journey easier. Tell us the specifics of your story to give your nurse the best chance to win: (up to 300 words).

What does “above and beyond” look like?

You might want to think about moments where your nurse:

  • Did more than what was expected in their role

  • Made an exceptional effort to help

  • Showed remarkable dedication, generosity, or compassion

  • Demonstrated a genuine passion for making a difference

  • Inspired confidence through their professionalism and care

  • Created meaningful, human moments that left a lasting impact

What to include in your story

Tell us:

  • What your nurse did

  • How it made you feel

  • The difference it made to your journey

“Nicola has supported me through every step from initial diagnosis, active monitoring and radiotherapy a year later. She makes time to discuss my concerns and always rings me back the same day if I need to talk to her.

“Nicola helps me maintain a positive outlook by providing lots of useful information. She also runs a 5K Your Way exercise program alongside Park Run each month, which me and my wife attend, and Nicola always checks in with her to see if she has any questions or concerns.

“I can't recommend Nicola highly enough. She treats you as an individual and is super friendly whilst maintaining a professional approach.”

Nicola Elves, Urology Macmillan Nurse Specialist at Sunderland Royal Hospital, shared how much winning the award meant to her:

“I was genuinely shocked when I first learned I had been nominated for this award — and then to be told I had actually won was absolutely overwhelming. I could hardly believe it. What makes this award so special is knowing that someone cared enough to take the time to submit a nomination.

“To me, I’m simply doing the job I love, so this recognition means the world. I’m extremely grateful and will treasure this achievement, as it feels like a onceinacareer moment.”

She also spoke about the impact of attending the conference:

“Attending the BAUN conference was an incredible experience — one I would not have had without winning this award. The programme was outstanding, and I learned so much that I’ve been able to share with colleagues and use to improve the care I provide to patients.

“I’m deeply thankful to Prostate Cancer UK for running an award that gives patients the opportunity to show their appreciation for the nurses who care for them. It’s a wonderful initiative that makes a real difference.”
