Improving support for sexual health and wellbeing
Sexual health and wellbeing are deeply personal and important aspects of life, yet they're often overlooked for men undergoing prostate cancer treatment.
We know surgery, radiotherapy, and long-term hormonal therapies can lead to erectile dysfunction and emotional challenges that affect confidence, intimacy, and relationships.
However, many men struggle to access consistent support, due to limited specialist services and referral pathways in some hospitals. Because of this, Movember published comprehensive Clinical Guidelines in 2022, calling for earlier, more open, and culturally sensitive conversations that involve both men and their partners.
These guidelines show recognition of prostate cancer as a long-term condition, impacting not only survival, but also everyday quality of life.
Research continues to show that treatment-related sexual difficulties can have lasting physical, emotional, and social effects on both men and their loved ones. To deal with this, there need to be honest and supportive discussions before treatment begins.
Working in partnership with Movember, we’re leading implementation efforts through expert-led workstreams and a targeted funding call, to close these gaps and make sure that every man affected by prostate cancer receives the compassionate, holistic sexual health and wellbeing support they deserve.
Funding call
This funding call supports NHS providers and partner organisations to improve sexual health and wellbeing support for men with advanced prostate cancer on Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT).
Successful applicants will:
- deliver trust-level quality improvement aligned with Movember’s Clinical Guidelines for Sexual Health and Prostate Cancer, with a strong focus on pre-treatment counselling
- use funding of £30,000–£40,000 to implement sustainable pathway improvements (not ongoing service delivery or research)
- identify and proactively signpost patients with the highest needs to a new Prostate Cancer UK remote support service
- demonstrate how changes will be embedded and sustained beyond the funded period
We'll offer successful applicants access to a new Prostate Cancer UK remote support service for the highest-need patients receiving treatment for advanced prostate cancer. This service will have a strong focus on pre-treatment counselling. Use your application to outline how you would triage and signpost to this service.
Please Note: This funding call is not intended to fund new staff posts, research studies, or routine clinical services, and projects must be deliverable within two years.
